Living in Virginia means that there are plenty of surprises waiting for you, and one of those surprises may be that you now live in bear country! The black bears that live in Virginia are typically very harmless, but you still need to know how to act when you see one.

If you encounter a black bear while you are hiking or walking in the woods, stop immediately. Stay very quiet, and do not turn away from the bear.Never heard of this before? Get up to speed here. Instead, start to back away slowly, planting your feet firmly on the grounds so that you do not trip. Do not run, as that might provoke the bear to give chase.

In the unlikely event that a black bear attacks you, make sure that you fight back. Black bears are usually quite docile, and they can often be driven off by people fighting back even with just their hands.

When you go camping, make sure that you do not store your food in the tent. Instead, hoist it up on a tree to keep it from curious bears and raccoons.

Black bears are not dangerous for the most part, so simply knowing how to handle them will keep you very safe.

The great group of men and women at the Lynchburg Virginia Police Department know the value of having a K-9 unit on the force. Many times these animals are the first to go into a risky situation, such as sniffing out explosives or running after a dangerous criminal. These canine officers are well trained and a part of the police force. In fact, they even wear badges and if one falls in the line of duty, they are given an officers funeral.

The handler-trainer of these dogs has a strong bond and the two officers will rarely be separated. However, when a K-9 patrol dog is in the workplace, there are rules that have to be followed by the other the Lynchburg Virginia police officers. They are usually not allowed to play with them, because in their training the play time is actually who they work. The dogs are trained to sniff out drugs, people and/or explosives. So, playing with them in the office could only confuse them and interrupt the training.

There are a variety of dogs that pose dangers to law enforcement personnel, but in many cases this is due to the treatment that these animals have received from their owners. Owners have the ability to train their dogs to be gentle human companions, or fierce and dangerous animals.

The American Stafford shire Terrier is usually one of the most dangerous dogs that is encountered by law enforcement personnel. These animals have a tenacious nature and great courage, that is result of a thorough breeding process. These dogs are very swift, as well as very strong for their size, which makes them very dangerous when provoked. What increases the danger of these animals is the fact that many owners abuse them, and train them for fighting purposes.

The Rottweiler at times poses dangers to law enforcement personnel. The Rottweiler is usually a mild tempered dog, but abuse, and aggressive training by owners can make them very dangerous. The Rottweiler is a very large dog, and is tremendously strong. Law enforcement officers encountering tenacious Rottweilers, often have to resort to putting these animals down with firearms, in order to prevent potential harm to themselves or other members of society at large.

With summer approaching and everyone heading out on the road, it’s a good time to talk about safety out on the highway. Almost all injuries and deaths on the highway can be avoided if people are aware of the driving behavior that regularly causes injuries and fatalities on our roads. Reckless or erratic driving kills hundreds of people both on the highway and in town every year.

Tailgating has resulted in the rise of rear end collisions and is prevalent on the highway today. Try to avoid tailgaters and “wolf packs” or groups of aggressive drivers. Try not to weave in and out of traffic, as it can cause a loss of control. Also avoid driving at excessive speeds and driving at more than 80 miles per hour. Every 5 miles an hour over the speed limit that you drive increases the energy of a crash significantly. Today’s best designed vehicles cannot absorb the energy of an impact at high speeds. The result is that the energy the vehicle doesn’t absorb is transferred to the body, which can cause significant injuries to everyone in both vehicles in the crash. Stay safe on the highway this summer by consistently driving the speed limit and avoiding reckless drivers.

As the temperatures rise in spring, many people look forward to the time they can spend out enjoying the great outdoors. Also during this time, the native wildlife are beginning to become more active and it is important to take the proper safety precautions so that a fun time can be had by both human and animal alike.

While driving in wooded areas, be watchful for animals such as deer, raccoons, opossum, skunks and other critters that may attempt to cross roadways. Not only is a collision quite dangerous for the animal involved, but the vehicles and humans involved could take quite a bit of damage too.

While on foot, you’ll want to wear the proper clothing. Heavy boots with good traction, long pants and long sleeves. Also be aware of snakes that may be hidden under piles of leaves or in rock crevasses.

Keep food stored in proper locations- don’t keep it in your tent, and make sure to dispose of all trash and food garbage in the proper locations.

Be watchful for signs that may advertise bear or moose sightings in your area. As exciting as it sounds, these animals need to be respected and could be dangerous.

The Lynchburg Police Departments logo states that it stands for “Leadership, Professionalism and Dedication”. Such words could not ring more true for such a wonderful and effective police department. It is one of the most highly educated police departments in the nature, with roughly 70 of the police officers working in the department having earned college degrees. It consists of roughly 170 officers and 35 civilian support personnel and it has done a great job of enhancing community safety since it’s creation in the year 1989.

It is a nationally accredited police department that features such programs as CrimeStoppers, bicycle patrols and crime analysts. Truly, citizens of the town of Lynchburg, Virginia do not have anything to worry about due to the wonderful work done by the members of the police department. However, it is still always important to keep home security in mind as although members of the police force are hardworking and do their very best, they can still not be everywhere in the city at everytime. For good home protection, one should look no further than adt security atlanta for the home security system that suits them best. One should always keep safety in their mind at all times, but it always helps to have a great taskforce to help you out as well.

As any citizen of the state of Virginia, or United States of America for that matter, you may at some point find yourself on the receiving end of a police officer’s inquiry. This is no time to panic, as an officer wanting to talk to you presumes no guilt or infraction on your part. There are many reasons for a police officer to initiate contact with a civilian, only a few of which could spell certain trouble. A police officer will only detain you for the short time necessary to determine whether or not you are in fact the person in question. Once he or she has concluded that you are not, the officer will thank you for your time and return to his regular duty. Among the most likely reasons for one to be stopped on the street would be wearing similar clothing or possessing similar features to the description of a suspect, traveling in the nearby vicinity of a recent crime scene, suspicious behavior, unlawful presence or the request of another concerned individual. If an officer approaches you, here are the important things to remember

Avoid sudden movements As a rule of thumb, it’s best to inform an officer before reaching for any possession on your person. Bear in mind, police officers often find themselves in potentially hazardous situations and sudden movements could be misconstrued as an intent to harm (i.e. reaching for a weapon).

Save jokes for later Anything you say may be taken literally. Joking about being armed, committing a crime or intending to commit a crime is a serious matter, as your tone or sense of humor may not be detectable to an officer on the job.

No touching Keep a distance of an at least a full arms length unless instructed otherwise. Policemen carry weapons not intended for use by citizens. A move towards an officer or his or her weapon could be construed as an act of aggression.

Follow directions First and foremost, comply with the request of an officer. If you have any questions, act first and ask later. Avoiding simple questions or refusing to heed to an order will only make the process last longer and less pleasant.

Just as if you were stopped on foot, when pulled over while traveling in your vehicle it is best to abide by common sense in your interactions with a police officer. Because their day to day job places them squarely in harm’s way, it is best to avoid any action that could place an officer on edge. In addition to avoiding sudden movements, maintaining a respectful and serious disposition, following directions and providing room for personal space, one would be wise to adhere to the following guidelines when subject to a traffic stop

Remain in your vehicle Unless asked specifically by an officer to step out of your vehicle, which is highly unlikely prior to an officer approaching your window, stay inside your car. Exiting your vehicle could be interpreted as either a flight risk or act of aggression and met with appropriate force.

Keep your hands in plain sight A car provides an additional hazard for a police officer as it offers restricted sight lines in regards to activity inside the vehicle. Do not reach into the glove box, under the dash or beneath a seat without first clearing it with the officer. Weapons and/or contraband could easily be stored in such places, both arousing an officer’s suspicion and posing a threat to his or her personal safety.

Pull over quickly and safely Failure to pull over as soon as possible once a police car has turned on its lights could be seen as noncompliance and result in possible charges, even if you were only initially pulled over as a cautionary measure. Police sometimes pull over cars matching suspect descriptions or in an effort to alert operators of maintenance defects. Also, make sure you pull over to a location in which the officer can access your vehicle with as little difficulty or danger as possible. Police officers already take a number of chances in the line of duty; routine traffic stops should not be one of them.

The City of Lynchburg Police Department became just the 124th law enforcement agency in the country to receive its national accreditation in November of 1989. Such status guarantees the department will adhere to the utmost standards in law enforcement. The LPD has been reaffirmed in its efforts on numerous occasions, including re-accreditations in 1994, 1999, 2002, 2005 and 2008, demonstrating a consistency in meeting goals and maintaining these lofty standards. The department will be reassessed in August of 2011, striving to once again find itself in the company of the most esteemed law enforcement agencies in the United States.Official accreditation is sanctioned by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), acting as an independent credentialing authority. The CALEA was established in 1979, as part of a joint effort between 4 law enforcement associations, including the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), the National Sheriffs Association (NSA) and the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF).The accreditation process serves as not only an honor to the agencies who are recognized as accredited entities, but as a means of establishing and maintaining a clearly set forth objectives in order to stay current with public safety initiatives. The officially held goals of the commission are to “strengthen crime prevention and control capabilities, formalize essential management procedures, establish fair and nondiscriminatory personnel practices, improve service delivery, solidify interagency cooperation and coordination, and increase community and staff confidence in the agency.”There are 5 steps in every accreditation process. First, an agency must enroll by contacting CALEA and submit an enrollment form either electronically on the CALEA website or via the hard-copy enrollment package. The following steps include a self-assessment of each agency by each agency, an on-site assessment by a team of trained assessors, a commission review and decision, which, if satisfactory, will result in a 3-year accreditation, and finally, maintaining compliance and reaccreditation, including an annual report and daily adherence to the “letter and spirit” of CALEA standards.
