Records Unit
The primary mission of the Records Unit is the
maintenance of all records kept in connection with normal police duties, such as records
of arrest and offenses reported to the police, and the proper dissemination of those
records to authorized persons or agencies. The Records Unit strives to provide prompt and
courteous service to both police officers, and the general public.
In addition to maintaining and disseminating
police records, the unit also provides the following services:
- Transcribes dictated tapes for investigators, including
interviews, follow-ups, and case history reports.
- Provides service to the window for requests of copies of
accident reports, arrest records, and verification of incident reports.
- Receive and acknowledge letters received from the public
barring persons from their property and/or requesting police to enforce " No
Trespassing" signs.
- Collect and receipt for money received for various police
services, such as police reports, record checks, fingerprinting, taxi registrations,
various permits, etc. Report of collections is then filed with the City of Lynchburg
Collections Department.
- The Unit maintains files by computer imaging system. Old
reports and criminal files are entered into this computerized file system, allowing easy
retrieval and freeing up shelf space.
- The unit also is responsible for filing Mug shots,
Processing requests by mail, answering inquiries by telephone, etc.
The Records Unit's operating hours for
the public are from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday- Friday.
